IUSD Students, Families, to Join City of Inglewood’s 2015 King Day Civil Rights March

MLK eventThe City of Inglewood will host its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Day Celebration on Monday, Jan. 19 – marking its 32nd annual commemoration of the life and accomplishments of the great civil rights leader.

Each year, the City celebrates with speeches from elementary, middle and high school students, inspiring keynote speakers, moving gospel choirs, performers, and a family festival in renewal of our commitment as a community to “Advance the Dream” –  the theme for 2015.

The City will kick off its 2015 King Day celebration at 9 a.m. with a commemorative program at Crozier Middle School. Following the program, this year the City of Inglewood is expanding the celebration to include a special Commemorative Civil Rights March to pay tribute to the courage and power of the many marches that Dr. King led and inspired that played such a key role in moving a nation to achieve the passage of the Civil Rights Act. This march is open to all members of the community and will leave Crozier around 11 a.m., culminating at the Fabulous Forum for the Family Festival.

Inglewood Unified has always been a strong supporter and participant in the King Day Celebration. Students and their family members are welcome and encouraged to attend. Some schools are participating individually with their students and families and others are invited to join the general IUSD contingency. We are excited for this event! The Inglewood High School Marching Band is foregoing the other parade in Los Angeles this year to be part of the Inglewood King Day Commemorative March.

IUSD will have a banner honoring Dr. King and hopes to have a strong presence marching behind it. Given the recent events across our nation, the release of the movie “Selma,” the promising Inglewood developments, and our work to get out the “Good News” of IUSD, this is an opportune moment to join in support of the community and the work of Dr. King.

Those planning on joining a school team should contact the site administrator. Questions can be directed to Dr. Steve McCray at smccray@inglewood.k12.ca.us.

Please join us in honoring and celebrating the King Legacy!
